Laozi. The foundational text of Taoist philosophy. Wu wei, emptiness, polarity, the water principle. Eighty-one verses on the dynamics of natural law — how the soft overcomes the hard, how emptiness contains all potential, and why the sage acts without forcing.

Everything in TCM traces back to this text.

Zhang Zhongjing. Circa 200 CE. The Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders. The origin of clinical formula medicine — systematic matching of symptom patterns to herbal prescriptions. Introduced the six-stage model of disease progression that remains the backbone of formula selection.

Li Shizhen. 1578. The Compendium of Materia Medica. The most comprehensive pharmacological text in Chinese medical history — 1,892 substances catalogued with properties, preparation methods, contraindications, and clinical applications. A monument of empirical observation.

Yan Yong-He. 1253. Formulas to Aid the Living. A formula text focused on practical clinical application, with particular strength in tonification and the treatment of deficiency patterns. Contains several foundational prescriptions still in daily clinical use.

Franklin, Powell, Emami-Naeini. The modern engineering formalization of the same principles the ancient texts discovered empirically. Transfer functions, stability analysis, observer design, disturbance rejection. The mathematical language that makes the bridge between Eastern wisdom and Western engineering explicit.
